Delhi Capitals are on the hunt for a new captain in IPL 2025 and they have a plethora of options to choose from, ranging from KL Rahul to Axar Patel. While the Karnataka keeper-batter is the latest addition to the side after the side acquired his services in IPL 2025 auction, old guard Axar was retained while the team let go of erstwhile skipper Rishabh Pant following IPL 2024. While the team has KL Rahul as an obvious choice for next captain, they should instead allow him to focus on his batting and hand over the reins to Axar Patel instead.

Why DC need Axar Patel as captain over KL Rahul

KL Rahul was purchased for Rs 14 cr by Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025 auction, making him one of the viable captaincy options. Rahul, who was previously the LSG skipper before moving to DC, needs to focus on his batting more than diverting his attention towards being the captain of the franchise. DC co-owner Parth Jindal had earlier indicated that Axar was one of their automatic captaincy options after they released Rishabh Pant. While Rahul has been one of the most consistent batters in the Indian Premier League, it would make more sense for the batter to focus on his primary skills rather than getting involved in captaincy, and should perhaps allow Axar to lead the side in IPL 2025.

Axar Patel was retained by Delhi Capitals for Rs 16.50 crore before the auction and remains the only player from DC’s core squad since the IPL 2020 final. DC also have an option for captaincy in the form of Faf du Plessis but would rather prefer an Indian skipper to lead the side.

“Yes, the Delhi Capitals could be looking for a new captain. There are chances that India all-rounder Axar Patel may take over as the new IPL captain or the franchise could be eyeing someone who is captaincy material at the IPL auction,” a DC source had told told the Times of India ahead of IPL 2025 auction.
