Former Australia batter Joe Burns has been named the new captain of Italy. Burns, who had essayed the role of an opener for the Aussies in the past, moved to Italy earlier this year in May. After making his debut for Italy in June 2024, he has now been named the captain of the side.

Since making his debut for Italy, Joe Burns has played five T20Is, amassing 211 runs at an average of 70.33. His last T20I for Italy saw the former Aussie star smash a century against Romania in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifier Group A.
“I am honoured to take on this role and represent Italy on the international stage. For me, it is a return to my family’s roots. Italian cricket has enormous potential and I am excited to contribute to its growth. Together with my team-mates, we are working to achieve ambitious goals and make our fans proud,” Joe Burns said on being named captain.

Burns, who amassed four centuries in 23 Test matches while playing for Australia, lost his Big Bash contract with the Melbourne Stars and was not extended a contract by Queensland for the 2024–25 season. He then made his move to Italy after his brother Dominic passed away in February. His mother’s roots in the European nation allowed him to qualify to represent the country.
