Violent offender arrested after stealing loaded firearm, deputies say
THIS IS WYFF NEWS FOUR TODAY. COMING UP ON WYFF NEWS FOUR. ANOTHER SOUTH CAROLINA INMATE PUT TO DEATH. RICHARD MOORE’S FINAL WORDS AND BATTLEGROUND BLITZ CANDIDATES AND THEIR FINAL PUSH TO SWING STATE VOTERS. THE COUNTDOWN TO ELECTION DAY. GOOD MORNING. I’M PEYTON FURTADO. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US HERE ON YOUR SATURDAY MORNING, 701. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT OUR WEATHER. THIS IS FROM OUR HILTON GREENVILLE SKYCAM. RIGHT NOW. OR YOU CAN JUST BARELY TELL. THE SUN IS BARELY TRYING TO MOVE UP. TRYING TO COME OUT RIGHT NOW. 61 DEGREES. JUST A HANDFUL OF CARS ON THE ROAD. LOOKS LIKE A GOOD START TO YOUR MORNING. WE’VE GOT SYDNEY SULLIVAN IN THE STUDIO WITH A SYDNEY. A LOT OF FOLKS ASK, WHEN’S THE BEST TIME OF THE DAY GOING TO BE? WHEN’S THE BEST TIME TO BE OUTSIDE? DO WE KNOW YET FOR TODAY? WELL, IT DEPENDS WHAT TYPE OF WEATHER YOU WANT BECAUSE AS WE’VE PROBABLY NOTICED THE LAST WEEK OR SO, WE HAVE THOSE COOL MORNINGS AND THEN MILD AFTERNOONS. SO IF YOU’RE A FAN OF THE COOL WEATHER EARLIER IN THE DAY OR NEAR SUNSET, THAT’S WHERE YOU’RE GOING TO SEE THE COOLEST TEMPERATURES. AS FAR AS TODAY GOES, THOUGH, IT’S GOING TO BE DRY ALL DAY LONG. SO THAT’S THE GOOD NEWS. IT IS COMING WITH SOME IMPROVEMENTS AS FAR AS OUR FOG AND VISIBILITY GOES. STILL SEEING IT STRETCHING FROM CULLOWHEE ALL THE WAY DOWN TOWARDS HARTWELL AND ANDERSON. LAURENS UNION. BUT THIS IS AN IMPROVEMENT. SO STILL TAKE IT SLOW OUT ON THE ROADS, BUT AT LEAST WE’RE NOT SEEING ANY MAJOR IMPACTS FOR THE TIME BEING. TEMPERATURES SITTING AT 62 IN GREENVILLE, 59 IN ANDERSON, AS WELL AS SPARTANBURG, 58 IN ASHEVILLE. SO TYPICALLY SPEAKING, THIS TIME OF YEAR, WE SHOULD BE SITTING IN THE 40S FOR OVERNIGHT LOWS. IT’S A MILD START, BUT YOU STILL MIGHT NEED A FEW EXTRA LAYERS HEADING OUT THE DOOR, AT LEAST TO START OUT BEFORE WE START TO SEE THAT WARMER AIR FILTER BACK IN. SO WE LOOK AT OUR LIVE SUPER DOPPLER FOUR NICE AND DRY. BUT THIS CLOUD COVER IS HANGING STEADY ACROSS THE CAROLINAS AND GEORGIA, SO YOU’LL NOTICE A LITTLE BIT MORE CLOUD COVER TODAY THAN SUNSHINE. BUT IT’S STILL GOING TO BE A NICE DAY TO GET OUT AND ABOUT. AS FAR AS WHERE TEMPERATURES GO, WE’LL TOP OUT RIGHT NEAR 70 DEGREES. SO A FEW EXTRA CLOUDS WILL KEEP OUR TEMPERATURES FROM RISING TOO MUCH. THIS AFTERNOON, BUT IT’S STILL GOING TO BE SITTING A FEW DEGREES ABOVE AVERAGE. CAN’T COMPLETELY RULE OUT SMALL CHANCE FOR A SPOTTY SPRINKLE OR TWO. MAINLY DRY CONDITIONS, AT LEAST FOR TODAY. BUT COMING UP, WE’LL HAVE A CLOSER LOOK AT OUR NEXT BEST CHANCE FOR MORE WIDESPREAD RAIN. PEYTON. THANK YOU SYDNEY. NOW TO SOME BREAKING NEWS OUT OF GREENVILLE COUNTY. THERE WAS NO OUTWARD SIGNS OF ANYTHING LIKE THAT. IT WAS A VERY I ALWAYS HATE TO USE THE WORD PEACEFUL ON THESE THINGS, BUT THERE WAS NO OBVIOUS SIGNS OF DISCOMFORT. MOORE’S EXECUTION WAS STEEPED IN CONTROVERSY. IN 1999, HE ENTERED A SPARTANBURG CONVENIENCE STORE, UNARMED, TO ROB IT. HE GOT IN A FIGHT WITH THE CLERK, JAMES MAHONEY. THE TWO SHOT AT EACH OTHER WITH GUNS FROM BEHIND THE COUNTER, LEAVING MAHONEY DEAD. DURING HIS TRIAL, PROSECUTORS STRUCK DOWN TWO BLACK JURORS, MAKING THE JURY ENTIRELY WHITE. RICHARD ESSENTIALLY IS ON DEATH ROW FOR A CRIME THAT IF IT WERE TRIED TODAY, WOULD EFFECTIVELY NEVER HAVE BEEN SOUGHT FOR THE DEATH PENALTY. HE WALKED INTO A CONVENIENCE STORE, UNARMED, IN THE 20 PLUS YEARS FOLLOWING HIS CONVICTION. RICHARD’S LAWYERS SAY HE BECAME A CHANGED MAN AND WORKED AS A MENTOR TO YOUNGER INMATES. IN A PRESS RELEASE TODAY, HIS LAWYER SAID IN PART, THIS EXECUTION UNDERSCORES THE FLAWS IN SOUTH CAROLINA’S DEATH PENALTY SYSTEM. WHO WAS EXECUTED VERSUS WHO WAS ALLOWED TO LIVE OUT THEIR LIVES IN PRISON APPEARS TO BE BASED ON NO MORE THAN CHANCE, RACE OR STATUS. AND IN RECENT YEARS, TWO JURORS AND THE ORIGINAL JUDGE THAT SENTENCED RICHARD MOORE CAME OUT IN FAVOR OF CLEMENCY. HOWEVER, THOSE CALLS WERE ULTIMATELY DENIED.
