India’s ex-cricketer turned broadcaster, Sanjay Bangar was surprised to see Mohammed Siraj left out of India’s team for the England ODIs and the upcoming Champions Trophy. Before the much-awaited IND vs ENG ODI series, Sanjay Bangar talks about the Indian team’s composition for the series and Champions Trophy. He talks about Siraj’s omission, Rishabh Pant’s inclusion in the XI and Shreyas Iyer’s addition to the team.
Sanjay Banger on Mohammed Siraj’s exclusion from Champions Trophy
He feels Siraj is a top bowler and doesn’t agree with the idea that Siraj is less effective with the old ball. Bangar said, “I am a little bit surprised as to how Siraj was part of the winning team as well. In some games, he did really well, like against Pakistan in Ahmedabad.” Even though Siraj performed well in past tournaments like the Asia Cup, he still didn’t make it to these important matches.
“I think there is a little bit of surprise, and the reason given is that they are looking at who is better-suited phase-wise. But I think a quality player is a quality player irrespective of the phase,” he added.
Since Jasprit Bumrah’s inclusion is still not decided due to his uncertainty over fitness, Mohammed Siraj could also make the cut for Champions Trophy.
KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant?
KL Rahul had a great 2023 ODI World Cup, except for the final against Australia. He scored 452 runs and was crucial in the middle order with Shreyas Iyer. But there are still questions about his spot in the team, especially with Rishabh Pant as a strong contender. Sanjay Bangar thinks Pant might have to wait before getting into the playing 11. “I don’t think both can play in the single line-up,” Bangar said. He also mentioned that the team might continue to rely on players like Jadeja for their left-handed batting option, which makes it tougher for Pant to break in.

Shreyas Iyer is a big asset
Sanjay Bangar also praised Shreyas Iyer for his outstanding skills against spin bowling. Despite sometimes going unnoticed, Shreyas has proved his mettle. Bangar noted, “He is an excellent player of spin, someone the team looks for at No. 4 and No. 5. He can attack spin really well,” he shared. According to Bangar, it’s tough to stand out when surrounded by players like Rohit and Virat, but Shreyas consistently performs well and deserves credit for his efforts.
