En Maharashtra, los disturbios encontraron refugiados en la precaución.
Ugly incidents unfolded at the 67th Maharashtra Kesari wrestling competition when a participant, Shivraj Rakhse, kicked the referee in the chest after disagreeing with a decision against him. Another wrestler, Mahendra Gaikwad, verbally abused the referee in a separate bout. Both wrestlers have been suspended for three years, banning them from the championship during this period.
Incident during Maharashtra Kesari
The tournament was held in Ahilyanagar (Ahmednagar) and prominent figures like deputy CM Ajit Pawar and Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol were in attendance. During a semifinal match between Rakhse and Prithviraj Mohol, Rakhse argued that his shoulder didn’t touch the mat during the body slam. In his defense, Rakhse claimed the kick was in response to the referee’s abusive language. “Despite this, the referee ruled that I had lost. I was abused when I was arguing my case and that is why I took this step (of kicking),” Rakhse stated.
Reaction and Suspension from the wrestler
Rakhse demanded action against the referee, even threatening legal action. The final between Mohol and Gaikwad also saw controversy when Gaikwad left the match early and abused the referee. Maharashtra Wrestling Organisation’s working president, Sandip Bhondve, justified the referee’s decision and announced suspensions, expressing concerns for referees’ safety. “The challenge of Rakhse to the ruling under article 31 of the United World Wrestling was not accepted,” Bhondve explained.
Opinions from Maharashtra Kesari officials
Chandrahar Patil, a former champion, criticized the referee for not reviewing Rakhse’s claims properly. Patil stated, “Rakshe has been a wrestler for more than 15 years. In just 10 seconds, his career has been destroyed due to the mistake of a referee.” Former coach Kaka Pawar also alleged that the referee erred in the decision-making process during the incident.
