While Friday started with the expectation of the announcement of Team India’s squad for the Champions Trophy, it did not happen again. But at least a final intimation from the BCCI did come, that it would finally be revealed on Jan 18. With that news, there also was a confirmation that Rohit Sharma would be the skipper of the team. Apart from that, there were all sorts of reports on Virat Kohli’s neck injury, and his suspected participation in the Ranji Trophy. Without further delay, let us take a look at the top stories from January 17 (Friday).
Captain Rohit Confirmed, Other Team Awaited
While there was no formal announcement that Rohit Sharma would lead the team in the Champions Trophy, the board did mention that he would address the media along with chief selector Ajit Agarkar after the squad is revealed. But there aren’t much surprises expected in the team for the coveted tournament.
Uncertainty Over Virat in Ranji Trophy
A report spoke about how Virat Kohli injured his neck during the Sydney Test, and that might just mean, he would skip Delhi’s next Ranji match. Although he is there in the squad, but he might just go on to practice with the team, that could do a world of good to a struggling Delhi side.
Rishabh Pant Says no to Captaincy
The same report also spoke about how Aysuh Badoni will continue to lead the Delhi side. Although it is confirmed that Rishabh Pant will play in the next Ranji match, but it seems the southpaw did not want to disturb the balance of the team.
Fact Check: Rinku Singh Engaged?
Friday also saw social media abuzz with rumours of Rinku Singh getting engaged to MP Priya Saroj. But then, as per Amar Ujala, MP’s father denied such reports. But then he went on to mention, that he did meet Rinku’s father in Aligarh, for the two’s alliance.
Lahore Stadium Still Incomplete
It seems that the PCB is all set to miss yet another deadline on the Lahore Stadium, one of the venues for the Champions Trophy. Now, the construction and repair work is only to be completed by Jan 30. This stadium is also supposed to play host to one of the biggest clashes in the tournament — AUS vs ENG.
BCCI to Probe Sanju Samson’s Omission from VHT
Sanju Samson was expected to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and that did not happen. And that could have potentially cost him a spot in the CT. There were reports that he wasn’t picked since he didn’t attend the KCA camp. But later, it was revealed that Sanju had expressed his desire to play in the tournament, and yet was not picked. Now, the BCCI could discuss this matter too, before the squad for the CT is discussed.
