The 2024 is almost over and now it is time for the ICC’s Men’s Emerging Cricketer award. The apex cricket body went on to reveal the nominees for the award. Gus Atkinson, Shamar Joseph, Kamindu Mendis, and Saim Ayub have made the shortlist. However, it is Pakistan‘s young rising star Saim Ayub who leads the race for the coveted award.
Saim Ayub
The young Pakistani batter, Saim Ayub has been a revelation for the Men in Green. With 515 runs under his belt from just 9 ODIs, he holds a healthy average of 64.37. The destructive southpaw has been a great find by Pakistan and has gone on to play well across all three formats of the game. But the ODIs, remain his best outing in 2024.
Gus Atkinson
Gus Atkinson took over the reins of England’s pace attack after the retirement of James Anderson. In the entire calendar year, he has gone to scalp 52 wickets from 11 Tests with a healthy average of 22.15. He kickstarted his debut with a brilliant 7 wicket haul and will continue to be a key player for the Three Lions in the coming days.
Kamindu Mendis
Another player who raised the bar in 2024 was Kamindu Mendis. The Sri Lankan batter became the third fastest in Tests to reach 1000 runs from just 13 innings. As he went on to match the record set by the great Donal Bradman, Mendis has now gone on to portray himself as the new face of Sri Lanka’s batting. With a healthy average of 50.03, he has gone on to score 1451 runs from 32 matches in the 2024 Calendar year.
Shamar Joseph
The West Indies have found a gem of pace and he goes by the name of Shamar Joseph. He went on to make his debut against Australia at Down Under and played a crucial role as the visitors breached the fortress Gabba. While he was later sidelined with injury, he continued his fine form in red ball cricket. With a healthy average of 26.75, he went on to notch up 29 wickets from just 8 Test matches.
