Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly hailed Shreyas Iyer as the ‘most improved batter’ over the past year, highlighting his remarkable growth and development. On Tuesday, March 25, Iyer delivered a match-winning performance for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their thrilling 11-run victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Iyer remained unbeaten, smashing 97 runs off just 42 deliveries, which included five boundaries and nine towering sixes. His stellar knock played a crucial role in Punjab Kings setting an imposing target of 244 for the Titans.
Despite a valiant effort by the Gujarat Titans, who managed to score 232 for five, Punjab successfully defended their total to secure the win. Ganguly expressed his admiration for Iyer’s progress and consistency, suggesting that the 30-year-old batter has now reached a level where he is capable of representing India in all three formats of the game.
Iyer’s performance on the field continues to reinforce his status as one of India’s finest batters and an integral player for both his franchise and the national team.
Sourav Ganguly praises Shreyas Iyer
Taking to X, Ganguly, also a former BCCI president, wrote, “Shreyas Iyer the most improved batsman in last 1 yr .. ready for all formats. Great to see his improvement after a few issues on length.“
Shreyas Iyer has recently been a consistent presence in India’s ODI lineup, showcasing his reliability in the format. However, he has faced challenges in cementing his position in the Test and T20I squads. Notably, Shreyas played a pivotal role in India’s successful Champions Trophy campaign, emerging as the top run-scorer for the team. His contributions were instrumental in helping the Men in Blue secure a memorable victory against New Zealand in the final.
