Five-time IPL-winning captain MS Dhoni spoke on his relationship with India’s star batter Virat Kohli. Both of the players share a good bond, as they are the only players who have been playing IPL right from start and for the same time. Dhoni has chosen not to disclose the contents of a supportive text message he sent to Virat Kohli, offering encouragement during a challenging period in Kohli’s international cricket career back in 2022. Kohli had mentioned that Dhoni was the only person to reach out after he stepped down from Test captaincy. Dhoni, three years later, insists that the exact message remains confidential to maintain trust among fellow cricketers.

Dhoni’s message for MS Dhoni

In a pre-IPL 2025 interview with JioHotstar, Dhoni explained his stance, “I will talk about the relationship, not the message. I like to keep it the way it is. What it does is, it lets other cricketers come to me and ask if they have anything in their mind,” he said. Dhoni emphasised the importance of confidentiality, “They have the feeling: ‘Speak whatever you want to him, nothing will come out. Whatever we speak, a third person wouldn’t know it’. he added. This trust is crucial, even for those Dhoni hasn’t played with, or may never play alongside.

Dhoni on Kohli’s determination

Reflecting on Kohli’s journey, Dhoni praised Kohli’s determination and hunger for success: “He was someone who was never happy with 40 or 60. He wanted to score a hundred and remain not out in the end. That hunger was there right from the start.” Dhoni also mentioned their candid discussions, saying, “He would come and talk to me, asking questions like, ‘What could I have done differently here?’” These interactions helped build a strong friendship beyond just a captain-junior player dynamic.

Heading into IPL 2025

As IPL 2025 unfolds, with both CSK and RCB starting strong with wins against KKR and MI, Dhoni and Kohli anticipate facing each other on March 28. Although not captains anymore, their friendship continues to thrive. “Both of us are not captains now, which gives us more time together before the toss,” Dhoni concluded.
