The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) apprised the captains of franchises about the Super Over rules ahead of IPL 2025. As per the rules, a time period of one hour will be given to the teams to determine the result of the tie. Within this one-hour period, multiple Super Overs can be played until a result is determined.

Super Over rules in IPL 2025

The BCCI informed the franchises that the captains would be told by the match referee as to which would be final Super Over (in case of recurring ones) if he feels that the one-hour time period will be breached.

As many Super Overs can be played until a winner is decided till one hour after the completion of the main match. The first Super Over has to start within 10 minutes of the main match finishing. If the first Super Over is a tie, then the subsequent Super Over must start five minutes after its completion,” the BCCI informed 

  1. A Super Over involves each team facing an over of six balls, and the winner shall be the team scoring the greater number of runs, irrespective of the number of wickets lost.
  2. The loss of two wickets in the over ends the team’s one-over innings.
  3. If the Super Over is a tie, subsequent Super Overs shall be played until a winner is determined. Other than in exceptional circumstances(As set out in paragraph 24 below), an unlimited number of Super Overs may be played where necessary to determine a result.
  4. Subject to weather conditions, the Super Over shall take place on the scheduled day of the match at a time to be determined by the IPL Match Referee. In normal circumstances, it shall commence 10 minutes after the conclusion of the match.
  5. The Super Over shall be played until completion, but if there are any delays or interruptions during the Super Over, extra time is allocated to complete the Super Over or any subsequent Super Overs. (The changeover period (10 minutes) for a Super Over after the main match is not to be taken into account when applying permitted extra time available). The amount of extra time allocated to the Super Over is the greater of;
  6. the gap between the time at which the match ended and the time the original match would have been scheduled to finish had the entire extra time provision been utilized,

or

  1. 20 minutes.
  2. The Super Over shall take place on the pitch allocated for the match, unless otherwise determined by the umpires in consultation with the Ground Authority and IPL Match Referee.
  3. Only nominated players in the match (including Concussion Replacements) may participate in the Super Over.
  4. Any penalty time being served in the match shall be carried forward to the Super Over.
  5. The umpires shall stand at the same end as that in which they finished the match.
  6. The team batting second in the match shall bat first in the Super Over.
  7. Each team shall be allowed to have one unsuccessful Player Review in each Super Over.
  8. The captain of the fielding team (or his nominee) shall select the ball which the fielding team shall bowl its over in the Super Over from the box of spare balls provided by the umpires (which shall include the balls used in the match, but not new balls). The team fielding second may then choose to use the same ball as chosen by the team bowling first or choose another ball from the same box. If the ball needs to be changed the relevant Playing Conditions as they apply in the match shall also apply in the Super Over.
  9. The fielding side shall choose the end from which it is to bowl its one over
  10. The Super Over shall be played with the same fielding restrictions as would be applicable for the last over in a match played in an uninterrupted match.
  11. The interval between the two overs in the Super Over shall be 5 minutes.

Super Over rules if it is recurring

  1. If the Super Over is tied, then subsequent Super Over will be played until there is a winner (subject to clause 16.3.1).
  2. In normal circumstances any subsequent Super Over will start 5 minutes after the previous Super Over ends.
  3. The team batting second in the previous Super Over will bat first in the subsequent Super Over.
  4. The balls selected for use by each team in the previous Super Over shall be used again by the same team in subsequent Super Over(s).
  5. The fielding side must bowl its over in a subsequent Super Over from the opposite end to which it bowled from in the previous Super Over.
  6. Any batter dismissed in any previous Super Over shall be ineligible to bat in the following Super Over. If a batter retires without getting injured during a Super Over then his innings will immediately be recorded as Retired Out & he will not be allowed to resume his innings even after the consent of the fielding captain. The batter will not be eligible to bat in the following Super Over.
  7. Any bowler who bowled in the previous Super Over shall be ineligible to bowl in the subsequent Super Over.
  8. In all other ways the procedure for a subsequent Super Over shall be the same as for the initial Super Over.

Super Over rule if unable to be completed

  1. Where the Super Over or subsequent Super Overs are abandoned for any reason prior to the completion, then the match shall be declared a tie and points allocated as in Clause 16.10.1
