Sunrisers Hyderabad unearthed a gem in the form of Nitish Kumar Reddy in IPL 2024. Such was his calibre that he went to make his T20I and Test debuts just months after his prolific run in the cash-rich league. The all-rounder delivered some memorable performances with the bat for the previous year’s runners-up. But this time, he needs to do just more than batting.

SRH need Nitish Reddy the all-rounder, not pure batter

Undoubtedly, Nitish is an automatic pick in SRH’s playing XI for all games in IPL 2025. His place in the side is cemented not because of his ability to act as a finisher, but because he is primarily an all-rounder. In the upcoming season, he needs to deliver with the ball as well. Reddy is potentially a viable wicket-taking option whom Cummins can turn to on a regular basis.

In 2024, Nitish managed to get only three wickets in the entire edition. He was a tad bit expensive, conceding 207 runs from 109 balls at an economy rate of over 11. For India, he has taken 3 wickets in 4 T20Is he has played so far, with an economy rate of 7.88.

Reddy hasn’t bowled a lot in the shortest format of the game. In fact, he only has six wickets from the 24 T20s he has played so far. But this needs to change, given that he is going on to become an all-format player. Be it for Team India or for SRH, Nitish will play a crucial role with not just the bat, but with ball as well.

While SRH have good pace-bowling options in the form of Cummins, Shami, Harshal Patel, Unadkat among others, it would only be a boost for the side if Nitish Reddy can bag some wickets as well. Should the all-rounder act only as a pure batter, then he is probably eating up a side in a playing XI which has no shortage of batting firepower.

It is pertinent to point out that the challenge with the ball won’t be that easy for Nitish. After all, he has just recovered from a side strain he sustained during the England series.
