On Wednesday, the Hisar police registered a case against former Indian kabaddi team captain and BJP leader Deepak Niwas Hooda, along with his sister Poonam on the dowry harassment charges. The complaint was filed by Deepak’s wife, Saweety Boora, who’s a renowned Indian boxer and world championship gold medalist.

Allegations on Deepak Hooda by Saweety Boora

Saweety’s complaint summarises incidents of torture and harassment that allegedly began soon after her marriage to Deepak in 2022. She accused Deepak and Poonam of demanding a Fortuner SUV as dowry instead of the Hyundai Creta car that her family had initially intended to gift. To meet this demand, her father reportedly deposited ₹11.59 lakh with Toyota and took a loan for the vehicle. Post-marriage, Saweety claims she faced taunts and pressure for additional funds, including demands by Deepak to arrange ₹1 crore for his political campaign. Additionally, she alleges that Deepak forced her to quit boxing and remain confined to household chores as well.

Deepak Niwas Hooda’s counter allegations

In response to Saweety’s allegations, Deepak filed a counter-complaint with Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya. He alleged that Saweety’s family had extorted money from him prior to their marriage, which they used to acquire property in Hisar. Deepak claimed that her family forced him into transferring considerable sums, totalling several lakhs, Deepak alleged that after marriage her father took ₹25 lakh, her brother ₹12 lakh, and her sister ₹9 lakh from him, while Saweety herself took ₹17 lakh before their marriage, which later contributed to tensions between the couple. He also accused Saweety of physically assaulting him and threatening to ruin his political career during all these years.

Legal proceedings underway

Both complaints have sparked a serious investigation by the Hisar police, with legal proceedings already in process. Hisar SP Shashank Kumar Sawan confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, although attempts to contact the couple for comments have been unsuccessful. Saweety has reportedly filed for divorce, seeking ₹50 lahks in alimony and monthly maintenance of ₹1.5 lakh.
