Ex-Pakistani cricketers have a knack of making inflammatory statements first, and then backtracking from them. Something similar has happened with Basit Ali as well. He has now apologised for his early prediction for Champions Trophy final in Lahore, as his team exited from the tournament. The hosts lost both their matches — first to New Zealand, and then to India, in what were one-sided contests.
“I apologise for saying that the final will be played in Lahore. I didn’t expect Pakistan to play like this,” Basit said on his YouTube channel. And following that, he went on to extend support to win the Champions Trophy in Dubai on March 9. “I genuinely wish India would dominate the tournament and win it. If South Africa and India play the final, it would be good because it will be like the T20 World Cup final,” he added.
Having said that, Pakistan is yet to play its final match of the campaign vs Bangladesh on Feb 27. But it seems there are a few changes lined up by the PCB for the team. Unhappy with loss against India, interim head coach Aaqib Javed is most likely to face the axe, as per various reports.
“Pakistan has to go to New Zealand for a white ball series from 15th March, and Aaqib Javed’s contract as interim head coach will end on 27th February, when Pakistan plays its final group match against Bangladesh,” source told PTI.
“So, definitely, the board will have to name a head coach for the NZ tour, but that appointment could also be of interim nature, someone from the national high performance centre since the PCB has not started the process of appointing a permanent head coach.”
