With uncertainty looming over Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for Champions Trophy, India cricket team selectors have been told to come up with a backup option. The premium pacer is awaiting feedback from New Zealand doctor Rowan Schouten on his reports which will decide on his participation in the marquee event. A report has now claimed that Mohammed Siraj is in the mix for a late entry into India’s squad as backup for Bumrah, given his vast experience.

Siraj as backup for Bumrah in Champions Trophy?

As per a Times of India report, a BCCI source claimed that selectors must have a backup plan ready for Bumrah as it would be a “miracle if he turns up 100% fit in the given time frame.” The report states that Siraj could be back in contention if Bumrah isn’t 100% fit for the tournament, given his vast experience.

“The selectors will only be informed if he (Bumrah) is ready to take the field after the entire process is complete. The selectors will need to keep a backup plan ready for him. It will be a miracle if Bumrah makes it,” the BCCI source told Times of India.

Despite his prowess in ODIs, Siraj was left out of India’s squad for ICC Champions Trophy and the IND vs ENG ODI series. India skipper Rohit Sharma had explained that they had preferred Arshdeep Singh over the Hyderabad pacer as the latter could deliver better with the new ball.

“It is only Siraj who is not there. We were not sure if Bumrah could play. We wanted someone who could bowl with the new ball. We wanted Arshdeep to do that role. But Siraj’s effectiveness comes down with the new ball. It is unfortunate that he misses out but we wanted guys who can perform certain roles,” Rohit had said.

While Harshit Rana has been included in the CT 2025 squad as back-up pacer, India’s pace unit currently comprises of Bumrah, Shami and Arshdeep. Should Bumrah be unavailable for the tournament, then Siraj would be a much better option in comparison to an inexperienced Rana.
