In what has come as a terrific news for cricket fans, Ravichandran Ashwin has been honoured with the Padma Shri award. The veteran all-rounder, who is one of the best bowlers India has ever produced, recently announced his retirement during the Border Gavaskar Trophy. As many as 139 Padma awards have been honoured by the Government of India, with 5 current and former players getting bestowed in sports field.

Apart from Ashwin , former Indian hockey captain PR Sreejesh has also been conferred with the Padma Bhushan award alongside Harvinder Singh, who won Paralympic gold in archery last year. Sreejesh hung up his hockey boots after claiming India’s second bronze medal at last year’s Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, football icon Inivalappil Mani Vijayan, known as black pearl of India, has been recognised with Padma Shri.

A career that started in 2010, Ashwin saw many ups—along with winning the 2011 World Cup, the 2013 Champions Trophy, and being a two-time finalist of the World Test Championships (WTC). It must be admitted that R Ashwin proved to be the most effective in Test matches, where he not only won numerous matches for India with the ball but with the bat as well. Ashwin finished his career with 765 wickets at an average of 25.8, the second-best tally by an Indian ever after Anil Kumble.
