The Ranji Trophy is on the front page once again as the Indian superstars have dazzled the domestic scene after an eternity. However, it was an anti-climatic day for sure, as all the mega players had nothing to show on Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy round 6. The only exception was obviously Ravindra Jadeja, who rattled Delhi’s batting lineup with a sensational fifer in Rajkot. Meanwhile, we had another talent making his name on the big stage as Siddharth Desai took 9/36. Apart from this, a 10th grade boy made his Ranji debut for Bengal, smashing Sourav Ganguly’s record. But now, let’s focus on the superstars, who gained all the limelight.

Rohit Sharma’s forgettable comeback

India’s captain Rohit Sharma’s return to domestic cricket was anything but memorable. Playing for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Rohit was dismissed for a mere 3 runs. His wicket came in a particularly underwhelming fashion, with a leading edge caught by J&K skipper Paras Dogra at mid-off. The low turnout at the BKC Ground seemed to mirror the lack of excitement in Rohit’s brief innings. But the spectators present there went back to their business as soon as the Indian captain went back to the pavilion.

Yashasvi Jaiswal & Shubman Gill equally bad

Paired with Rohit for the first time in Mumbai’s lineup, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s debut was equally disappointing as well. The young opener was pinned in front of the wicket by J&K’s right-arm pacer Auqib Nabi, managing just 4 runs before his dismissal. The fresh wicket played into the bowler’s hands, making life difficult for the batters. Meanwhile, Punjab’s captain Shubman Gill suffered an even more dramatic collapse.

Leading his state team at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Gill was dismissed for a mere 4 runs in eight balls. His wicket came early in the first session, caught by Abhilash Shetty. The situation quickly deteriorated, with Punjab being bundled out for just 55 runs—their lowest total in 46 years and the lowest in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season.
