Dhruv Jurel is all set to miss the second leg of Ranji Trophy which commences on January 23. The keeper-batter has been included in India’s squad for IND vs ENG T20Is. But it is highly unlikely that he will make it to the playing XI, given that Sanju Samson is Suryakumar Yadav’s first-choice keeper. While rationale behind Jurel’s inclusion in the squad is unknown, it is best if he is released from the side and is allowed to play for Uttar Pradesh in the second leg of the domestic red-ball tournament.

Not T20Is, Jurel should play in Ranji Trophy 2nd leg

Jurel played his last T20I in 2024 against Zimbabwe. In 2 matches, he has just 6 runs to his name, having batted in just 1 innings. While the keeper-batter looked in great touch during training at the Eden Gardens on Sunday as he took apart the bowlers including Shami, it would be wise for him to stay focused on red-ball cricket than white-ball formats. Jurel has grown consistently in first-class cricket ever since his debut for UP in 2022. He featured in the Duleep Trophy for two consecutive years in 2023 and 2024 and even played for Rest of India (ROI) in their Irani Cup tie against Mumbai last year.

Latest news

The keeper-batter’s consistent performances in domestic red-ball tournaments helped him earn his maiden Test team call-up and debut in IND vs ENG series in January 2024. After a brief pause following that series owing to IPL 2024, Jurel returned to red-ball action as he was a part of Duleep Trophy once again followed by the Irani Cup. He then secured a spot in India’s squad for the series against New Zealand and Australia, and even managed to play IND vs AUS 1st Test in Perth in the absence of Shubman Gill.

With 1235 runs from 22 first-class matches and averaging 45.74, Jurel is a rising star in red-ball cricket and shouldn’t be deviating from it. It would be wise for the team management to release Jurel from the T20I squad and allow him to play in the Ranji Trophy 2nd leg, giving UP a much-needed boost. His last Ranji Trophy game for Uttar Pradesh came against Kerala in January 2024.
