Former India chief selector Sunil Joshi has warned India to not tread the western way and adopt split coaching. His remarks come in the backdrop of suggestions made to have two separate coaches for India. The call gained momentum after Gautam Gambhir and co. came under fire following the 3-1 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

No need for split coaching: Joshi

Speaking to Times of India, Joshi pointed out that India needed to go with the route that suited them rather than following England, when it came to appointing coaches. He highlighted that majority of the Indian stars were all format players, with very few exceptions, and that hence it won’t make any difference in having two separate coaches. He also claimed that there could be chances of the two coaches having different views, adding that the dynamics became extremely different when a team had multiple coaches.

We should not be going the Western way. We should be going our own way, what suits us, because the majority of our players are going to be there for all three formats. Very few exceptions are there who are going to feature (only) in Tests or T20s and ODIs. So it doesn’t make any difference,” Joshi said.

When you have two coaches, there’ll be two different views on how to play cricket, although you might say they are all professionals and everything. But still, there is the 1% possibility of being judgemental,” added Joshi.

Even before BGT, rumours o split coaching did rounds. However, the BCCI has no plans to adopt that model. Instead, the only change that the board has made after the Australia tour is to add a batting coach (Sitanshu Kotak) to the support staff in order to enhance the team’s batting. India will next be in action against England in the five-match IND vs ENG T20I seriess.
