Anup Sridhar, who has coached Indian badminton stars PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen, has signed a long-term deal to become the singles coach for the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA). However, his appointment will begin only after his employment visa is approved, which may take about three weeks. “We do not have a start date as it is dependent on the work visa approval, and we certainly want Anup to join us as soon as possible,” said David Tan, SBA’s Vice President.

Tan mentioned that the agreement with Sridhar is for the long term, but specifics remain confidential. After working with Sindhu for a short-term deal that ended in December, Sridhar decided to accept the offer from SBA.

Role and responsibilities

Sridhar will work alongside South Korean coach Kim Ji-hyun, who is the current chief coach for Singapore. Contrary to rumours, Sridhar won’t be the head coach but will provide additional support to the men’s and women’s singles teams. This clarification was necessary as some media incorrectly reported his role. “SBA is indeed appointing Anup Sridhar to this role as Singles Coach, but this is not as men’s singles head coach,” Tan clarified.

Why Sridhar for SBA?

Sridhar impressed SBA with his deep understanding and analysis of the game, making him a strong candidate for this role. As a former Indian Olympian who participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and captained India’s Thomas Cup team in 2006 and 2008, his experience is invaluable. After retiring, he took up the coaching job where he coached Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and men’s singles ace Lakshya Sen. He is expected to bring valuable insights to help strengthen Singapore’s national badminton team.
