El BCCI pasa por alto a Sanju Samson en el equipo del Champions Trophy de la India, pero carece de confianza en las habilidades ODI del portero.

Sanju Samson no juega en un ODI/A desde diciembre de 2023.

Sanju Samson won’t be considered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) while selecting the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. The wicketkeeper who has been in the form of his life has been doing exceptionally well in the shortest format of the game, T20Is, but the selectors aren’t sure of Samson’s prowess in the longer white-ball formats, ODIs.

Why Sanju Samson won’t be picked in India’s squad for Champions Trophy

According to SportsTak, BCCI acknowledges Samson’s recent record in international cricket (T20Is) and appreciates his talent for ball striking but can’t select someone who hasn’t played a 50-over match in over 13 months. As per BCCI’s new guidelines, all centrally contracted players must feature for their states in domestic cricket. However, Samson wasn’t available for Kerala in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25.

This is something the BCCI has taken note of. In fact, they had launched a probe into how and why Samson missed the only domestic List A/50-over tournament schedule before the ICC Champions Trophy. All the BCCI knows is that Samson wasn’t in India during part of the Vijay Hazare Trophy and, for reasons unknown, wasn’t even included in Kerala’s squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Given all of this, it is extremely tough for BCCI to select a player who hasn’t followed the rules set and hasn’t played a 50-over match in over a year. Samson was already fighting for spots with Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Dhruv Jurel, but now his battle is different altogether.

Sanju Samson’s ODI & List A stats

Samson, in the limited opportunities given, has wonderful ODI numbers for the India cricket team. However, his overall List A record suggests otherwise. Samson averages under 34 after 128 matches and has scored just 3 centuries. That’s a hundred every 40 innings. For someone of his talent, the record isn’t justified. The BCCI would also give his stats a look, but whether they’ll play a role or not, that’s to be seen.

Innings Runs Average Strike Rate 100s 50s
ODIs 14 510 56.66 99.60 1 3
List A 119 3487 33.85 90.21 3 19
