In what turned out to be a one-sided affair, Vidarbha led by Karun Nair, managed to reach the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Thursday, after beating Maharashtra by 69 runs. After being set a target of 381 runs, Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s side could only manage 311/7 in reply. Now, Vidarbha will be up against Karnataka in the summit clash on Jan 18 in Vadodara.
Karun Nair Averages 752 in Vijay Hazare Trophy
The day of the semi-final, once again belonged to the player, who has created ripples in Indian cricketing circles once again, Karun Nair. With yet another 88 not out, now the domestic veteran has 752 runs to his name, in 8 matches, at a mind-boggling average of 752, with five tons and one fifty.
After Vidarbha openers Dhruv Shorey (114) and Yash Rathod (116), gave an explosive start to the team, Karun kept the flow of runs, going. He played his innings at a strike-rate of 200, giving another reminder to the national selectors, that he should be considered for the Indian team. The carnage from Vidarbha did not stop there, though. Wicket-keeper Jitesh Sharma struck 51 from 33 to take the team into an unbeatable situation.
Ruturaj Gaikwad Continues to Struggle
As for Maharashtra bowlers, they were poor throughout, with Rajneesh Gurbani leaking 78 runs in 8 overs, while Mukesh Choudhary gave away 80. Come the chase, Maharashtra started in the worst possible manner, with skipper Gaikwad failing once again in the tournament. He got out for 7, while Rahul Tripathi was out for 27.
Youngster Arshin Kulkarni did manage a 90-run innings, but that was never going to be enough on the day, Ankit Bawne chipped in with 50 from 49 and keeper Nikhil Naik scored a brisk 26-ball 49. Darshan Nalkande and Nachiket Bhute ensured a victory for Vidarbha with three wickets each.
