The BCCI Selection Committee will select the India squad for the ICC Champions Trophy after the Vijay Hazare Trophy finals. And with that Devdutt Padikkal has emerged as a strong candidate to put forward his name for the selection. He played a crucial knock for Karnataka to score his 7th consecutive 50+ score in the tournament over two seasons.

Banking on the performance of Padikkal (86), Karnataka has now secured their spot in the finals of the tournament. For the southpaw, he played just his second game of VHT after returning from Australia. On his return, he slammed 102 against Baroda. And yesterday’s 86 against Haryana marked his 7th fifty-plus score.

Padikkal surpasses modern-day greats

Interestingly, the Devdutt Padikkal also smashed a stunning record. He went on to cross 2000 runs in List A cricket. He now boasts of having an average of 82.38. And that is the highest among batters who have crossed 2000 runs. Virat Kohli on the other hand, has an average of 57.05.

The southpaw also went past others like Ruturaj Gaikwad (58.16), Michael Bevan (57.86), and AB de Villiers (53.47) to become a part of an elite category. It will be a pleasing sign for the batter who was ignored after his only one outing in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Padikkal was a part of India A, which toured Australia. He played in India vs Prime Minister XI and then got a chance to be featured in the Perth Test. The absence of Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma paved the way for him to get a chance, but he couldn’t make the best use of it.

0 and 25 are what he scored in Perth, the only Test match that India managed to win in IND vs AUS Test series. But on the back of his good performance in VHT, he certainly makes a strong case for his selection in the ICC Champions Trophy, but will be facing strong competition from other players as well.
