The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has outlined the course of action that each player that represents the India cricket team has to take. For some time now, the BCCI has allowed some players to skip bilateral series and domestic tournaments. That won’t be the case going forward.

BCCI tightens the screws

The decision has been taken after Team India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia earlier in the month. According to a PTI report, until a player provides a valid medical reason, they can’t decide which tournament they feature in. This goes for both international and domestic cricket.

Last year, the BCCI had told players that domestic cricket is a must for them. The board had also reprimanded Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan for going against the said mandate and excluded them from the central contracts. Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir also recently emphasised how important domestic cricket is and that he wants all players of his team to play for their states if and when possible.

“There was a detailed discussion on the Border Gavaskar Trophy performance and what all went wrong and the course correction required. But do not expect a hurried decision from the new dispensation of BCCI,” a source told PTI.

Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli in focus

While no name was mentioned, it could be a direct hint at star batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Kohli had skipped the entire India vs. England Test series last year due to his second child’s birth, while the Indian captain had missed the Perth Test for the same reason as well. Both had also skipped the Duleep Trophy, which was during a rest period, and stars like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill featured in the red-ball tournament.

There have been talks of how Kohli and Rohit will be told to play in the second leg of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season and as per the report, the BCCI has told all of there players to make themselves available for selection to their respective states.
