In the second Test match against South Africa in Cape Town, Pakistan faced penalties because they didn’t bowl their overs quickly enough. This means they had to pay a fine of 25% of their match earnings and also lost five points in the ICC World Test Championship. The decision was made by Richie Richardson from the ICC Elite Panel after it was found that Pakistan was five overs behind, even after considering the extra time given to them. In the WTC Table, they were in 8th position with 40 points; now, after the deduction, they are still sitting in the same position with 35 points.

How the penalties work

According to ICC rules, if a team is behind by one over, they have to pay 5% of their match fee as a fine. In the World Test Championship, if a team falls short by one over, they lose one point. So, with Pakistan being five overs short, they ended up losing five points. Shan Masood, the captain of the Pakistan team, agreed to the penalty because of their slow over rate, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
