The Malaysia Open 2025 kicked off with a mix of challenges and triumphs for Indian shuttlers. While HS Prannoy faced an unexpected disruption in his match against Brian Yang due to roof leakage, he managed to maintain his lead before the pause. Meanwhile, the women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand impressed with a dominant 21-10, 21-10 victory over Thailand’s Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn and Sukitta Suwachai. All eyes are on the Indian contingent, including Lakshya Sen, Anupama Upadhyay, Priyanshu Rajawat, and Aakarshi Kashyap, as they aim for a strong start to the 2025 BWF Circuit season.

HS Prannoy’s match disrupted due to roof leakage

HS Prannoy’s match against Canada’s Brian Yang was interrupted due to an unexpected roof leakage, which rendered court three unfit for play. The players were forced to withdraw temporarily while officials assessed the situation. Prannoy, who had a solid start, was leading 6-3 after winning the first game 21-12. Unfortunately, the match will resume tomorrow, as the roof issue continues to delay proceedings.

Before the delay, Prannoy had a slow start but quickly found his rhythm. After trailing, he made a series of impressive smashes and controlled the first game comfortably. However, the second game proved more challenging, with Brian Yang fighting back fiercely. At the time of the pause, the score was 9-9 in the second game, after Yang had levelled up with strong play.

A strong start for Treesa & Gayatri

The women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand had an impressive start to the tournament. They comfortably defeated Thailand’s Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn and Sukitta Suwachai 21-10, 21-10 in just 30 minutes. Their swift victory added to India’s early successes in the competition.

Other Indian players in action

Indian shuttlers Lakshya Sen, Anupama Upadhyay, Priyanshu Rajawat, and Aakarshi Kashyap are all expected to perform strongly. With a mix of experienced players and young talent, India is hopeful for a successful start to the year.
