Don’t be alarmed: Duke Energy to test nuclear sirens in the Upstate soon

THIS IS WIFE NEWS FOR TODAY. I’M JARVIS ROBERTSON IN ATLANTA AT THE CARTER PRESIDENTIAL CENTER, WHERE THOUSANDS HAVE BEEN SHOWING UP OVERNIGHT AND INTO THE MORNING TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS FOR FORMER PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER. AND NEW INFORMATION. A TRUCKING COMPANY SPEAKING OUT AFTER ONE OF THEIR TRUCKS WAS INVOLVED IN A BOMB THREAT THAT SHUT DOWN INTERSTATE 85 FOR HOURS. WE’LL GET TO ALL THAT IN A MINUTE. I’M PEYTON FURTADO. GOOD MORNING. IT’S SUNDAY, 7 A.M. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. LET’S TAKE A LOOK OUTSIDE. THIS IS FROM OUR HILTON GREENVILLE SKYCAM A LIVE LOOK. YOU CAN TELL THE SUN IS STARTING TO COME OUT 32 DEGREES. FEELS LIKE 32 OUT THERE. OOH, IT’S CHILLY, BUT DON’T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT. WE’VE GOT SYDNEY SULLIVAN IN THE STUDIO WITH US. SYDNEY, IS THIS A HAT AND GLOVES? COAT, SCARF. KIND OF A DAY. YES, ALL OF THE ABOVE. I WOULD SAY IF YOU’RE TRYING TO STAY WARM, DEFINITELY KEEP ALL OF THOSE LAYERS HANDY. NOT JUST TODAY, BUT REALLY THROUGHOUT THIS UPCOMING WEEK. IT IS GOING TO BE A CHILLY ONE WITH SOME ACTIVE WEATHER POTENTIALLY IN THE FORECAST. BUT LET’S MAP OUT WHAT WE’RE WATCHING RIGHT NOW. LOOKING AT OUR LIVE SUPER DOPPLER FOUR. MOST OF THE UPSTATE, NORTHEAST GEORGIA AND WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA ARE DRY FOR THE TIME BEING. STARTING TO SEE A LITTLE BIT OF PRECIPITATION WORK ITS WAY A LITTLE BIT CLOSER TO OUR AREA, SOME OF WHICH IS IN PARTS OF NORTH GEORGIA, AND THAT IS BRINGING WITH IT A LITTLE BIT OF A WINTRY MIX AND EVEN A FEW FLURRIES. NOW FOR US, THAT’S GOING TO BE ISOLATED, BUT STILL POSSIBLE THAT PARTS OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA COULD, IN FACT SEE A LITTLE BIT OF THIS WINTRY WEATHER MIX IN WITH RAIN. MOST OF US ARE GOING TO SEE RAIN OVER THE NEXT 24 HOURS, BUT THAT WILL BE SOMETHING WE’LL NEED TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON BECAUSE IT COULD LEAD TO A FEW ISOLATED SLICK SPOTS ALONG THE ROADWAYS. TEMPERATURES RIGHT NOW, IF YOU’RE HEADING OUT THE DOOR HEADED TO CHURCH, BUNDLE ON UP. TEMPERATURES ARE SITTING FOR MOST OF US BELOW FREEZING, AND OVER THE NEXT 12 HOURS WE REALLY WON’T SEE OUR TEMPERATURES RISE MUCH. WE’LL GET INTO THE LOWER 40S, BUT IT’S GOING TO COME WITH A LOT OF CLOUD COVER, A LITTLE BIT OF A BREEZE, AND OCCASIONAL SHOWER OR TWO THROUGHOUT THE DAY. A LOT OF THIS MOISTURE WILL BEGIN TO PICK ON UP LATER TONIGHT. COMING UP, I’LL HAVE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE LATEST TIMING AND THE IMPACTS THAT YOUR TOWN COULD SEE. PEYTON. SYDNEY. THANK YOU. IT’S CHILLY OUT THERE AND IT’S CHILLY IN ATLANTA RIGHT NOW. TRIBUTES ARE STILL POURING IN THIS MORNING FOR FORMER PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER FOLLOWING HIS DEATH EXACTLY ONE WEEK AGO. HIS FUNERAL SERVICES CONTINUE TODAY IN ATLANTA. JARVIS ROBERTSON BRAVING THAT COLD FOR US. HE’S FROM OUR SISTER STATION. HE’S JOINING US LIVE IN GEORGIA FROM THE CARTER PRESIDENTIAL CENTER. GOOD MORNING. JARVIS. HEY GOOD MORNING PEYTON. THE COLD TEMPERATURES HERE IN ATLANTA NOT STOPPING THE PEOPLE WHO ARE COMING IN DROVES TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS TO FORMER PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER. NOW, HIS BODY LIES IN REPOSE HERE AT THE CARTER CENTER. NOW, THE JOURNEY OF HIS BODY COMING FROM PLAINS BACK HERE TO ATLANTA WAS ONE THAT WAS MET WITH A LOT OF HONOR AND DIGNITY, FROM A BELL RINGING TO PEOPLE LINING THE STREETS AND HOLDING UP SIGNS. ONCE THE CASKET MADE IT HERE TO THE PRESIDENTIAL CENTER, A CEREMONY WAS HELD. PRESIDENT CARTER LEAVES A LEGACY OF STRONG HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS AND FAITH. THE CARTERS SPENT YEARS BUILDING HOMES FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. THERE IS A 24 HOUR PUBLIC VISITATION THAT IS GOING ON RIGHT NOW UNTIL 6 A.M. TUESDAY. NOW, A DEPARTURE CEREMONY WILL BE HELD LATER THAT MORNING. THE LATE PRESIDENT AND HIS FAMILY WILL TRAVEL TO DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, WHERE THEY WILL DEPART FOR WASHINGTON. A SERVICE IS ALSO SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE AT THE U.S. CAPITOL LATER THAT DAY, WHICH IS GOING TO BE FOLLOWED BY A BRIEF SERVICE ON THURSDAY THE NINTH, WHICH PRESIDENT BIDEN HAS DECLARED AS A NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING. NOW, THE FUNERAL PROCESS WON’T END THERE. HIS BODY WILL BE TAKEN BACK TO PLAINS A LITTLE BIT LATER THIS WEEK, WHERE ANOTHER PRIVATE CEREMONY WILL BE HELD AT MARANATHA BAPTIST CHURCH. THAT IS WHERE PRESIDENT CARTER SPENT DECADES TEACHING SUNDAY SCHOOL AND SHARING HIS FAITH WITH THE PUBLIC. AFTER THAT, HIS BODY WILL BE BURIED NEXT TO HIS BELOVED WIFE, ROSALYNN CARTER, REPORTING LIVE IN ATLANTA THIS MORNING. I’M JARVIS ROBERTSON, WYFF NEWS FOUR. JARVIS, THANK YOU AGAIN FOR BRAVING THE COLD FOR US. GREAT JOB. OUR JANE ROBELOT IS GOING TO CONTINUE THAT REPORTING LIVE FROM ATLANTA AT THE CARTER CENTER THROUGH MONDAY. WE’RE GOING TO GO TO SOME BREAKING NEWS LOCALLY. NOW THIS IS IN GREENVILLE COUNTY. THE CORONER HAS RESPONDED TO A CRASH INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN LAST NIGHT. NOW WE’RE TOLD THIS HAPPENED AT NORTH FRANKLIN ROAD AND WEST BLUE RIDGE DRIVE HEADED TOWARDS THE CHERRYDALE REGION. OFFICIALS SAY ONE VEHICLE HIT A MAN OUTSIDE OF A CROSSWALK. HE WAS WALKING IN THE ROAD AND A SECOND VEHICLE HIT THAT PEDESTRIAN. PRETTY SOON AFTER, THE CORONER SAYS 36 YEAR OLD TYLER ZACHARY SMITH DIED ON THE SCENE. TROOPERS HAVE NOT RELEASED ANY ADDITIONAL DETAILS ON WHAT LED UP TO THAT CRASH, BUT WE’RE WORKING TO LEARN MORE. AND HERE’S SOME BREAKING NEWS IN CHEROKEE COUNTY, WHERE A DRIVER DIED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION. THIS IS AN INTERESTING ONE, TOO. TROOPERS SAY THIS HAPPENED AROUND 730 LAST NIGHT ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY FIVE, JUST TWO MILES EAST OF BLACKSBURG. THEY SAY A CAR WAS TRAVELING WEST ON SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY. SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY FIVE AND AN 18 WHEELER WAS TRAVELING EAST WHEN THEY BOTH COLLIDED HEAD ON. THE CAR’S DRIVER DIED AT THE SCENE. THERE WERE NO PASSENGERS IN THAT CAR. THE TRACTOR TRAILERS DRIVER WAS INJURED AND TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. WE DON’T KNOW THAT DECEASED’S NAME AT THIS POINT, AND IN GREENVILLE COUNTY, A SUSPECT IS NOW IN CUSTODY AFTER BARRICADING HIMSELF IN A HOME WITH A SMALL CHILD. OFFICERS SAY THEY RESPONDED TO A DOMESTIC SITUATION ON VANDERBILT CIRCLE LAST NIGHT. THEY SAY 29 YEAR OLD JALEN BRACEY BARRICADED HIMSELF IN A BEDROOM WITH A BABY. OFFICERS SAY THAT BABY IS SAFE AND JALEN HAS BEEN ARRESTED. BRACEY IS BEING CHARGED WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND KIDNAPING, AND YESTERDAY, GLOBE TRANSPORTATION, THAT COMPANY WHOSE TRUCK WAS INVOLVED IN THE INTERSTATE 85 BOMB THREAT THAT SHUT DOWN LANES FOR HOURS. THEY RELEASED A STATEMENT ADDRESSING WHAT THEY CALL MISINFORMATION. THE COMPANY SAYS THEY’VE BEEN OVERWHELMED BY CALLS FROM SOUTH CAROLINIANS CLAIMING THEY HIRED DRIVERS WITHOUT VALID LICENSES OR THE ABILITY TO OPERATE TRUCKS. NOW, THEY INSIST THOSE CLAIMS ARE FALSE. IN THEIR STATEMENT, THEY SAID AHMED AL-HINDI, THE ALLEGED SUSPECT AND DRIVER, HAD A VALID AND ACTIVE COMMERCIAL DRIVER’S LICENSE ISSUED BY THE STATE OF ILLINOIS. THE STATE OF HIS RESIDENCE. HE IS, THEY SAY, LEGALLY AUTHORIZED TO OPERATE A COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE AND HAS A CLEAN MOTOR VEHICLE RECORD. THEY GO ON TO SAY THE ONLY ISSUE AT HAND WAS THAT THE DRIVER LOST THE TRAILER LICENSE PLATE WHILE DRIVING, WHICH LED TO HIM BEING PULLED OVER BY A POLICE OFFICER. THEY ENDED THE STATEMENT WITH, WE TAKE PRIDE IN OUR COMMITMENT TO SAFETY, COMPLIANCE AND MAINTAINING A PROFESSIONAL WORKFORCE. WE WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE TRANSPARENTLY, TRANSPARENTLY AND ENSURE THAT ALL OUR DRIVERS MEET THE NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS AND LEGAL REQUIREMENTS. IF YOU WANT TO LOOK AT THE FULL STATEMENT, JUST GO TO OUR WEBSITE WYFF4.COM. AND THIS IS A VIRAL TIKTOK VIDEO THAT’S BEEN CAUSING A LOT OF CONVERSATIONS ABOUT SPARTANBURG COUNTY. 911. YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN IT AND NOT EVEN REALIZED IT’S IN OUR OWN BACKYARD. IT STARTS WITH A WOMAN CALLING TO REPORT A SUSPICIOUS MAN AROUND HER HOME, CAPTURED ON RING CAMERA. SHE SAYS AN OFFICER THEN DROVE BY BUT DIDN’T SEE THE MAN. STILL FEELING UNSAFE, SHE CALLED AGAIN, SAYING THE MAN RETURNED. SHE CLAIMS SHE WAS THEN REFUSED FURTHER ASSISTANCE BY THAT TELECOMMUNICATOR. WE CAN TAKE A LISTEN TOGETHER. THERE IS NOBODY OUTSIDE. OH WELL, I MEAN, I’M LOOKING AT HIM RIGHT NOW. CAN THEY CAN THEY DRIVE BY IT AGAIN, OR DID THEY GET THE WRONG HOUSE? THEY’RE NOT GOING TO COME BY. WHAT THEY SAY. THEY’VE COME BY AND THERE’S NOBODY OUT THERE. MA’AM. COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE. I KNOW THEY DID. WHY? YOU’RE. I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY CAN’T DRIVE BY AGAIN, MA’AM, OFFICER HAS ALREADY COME OUT THERE. WHY DIDN’T HE KNOCK ON MY DOOR OR TALK TO ME OR ANY OF THAT? MA’AM, I CAN’T ANSWER THOSE QUESTIONS BECAUSE I’M NOT AN OFFICER. ALL I CAN TELL YOU IS, CAN YOU TALK OUT THERE? CAN YOU TALK TO THE OFFICER? I DID ALREADY, MA’AM. THAT’S HOW I KNOW HE. WHAT DID HE SAY EXACTLY? DID HE PASS A RED HOUSE, MA’AM, THERE’S NOBODY THERE. HE WAS STANDING IN THE DOORWAY, MA’AM, I DON’T. HELLO, MA’AM. SO I’VE GOT THIS STRANGE MAN WALKING AROUND MY HOUSE, AND Y’ALL AREN’T GOING TO HELP ME. HE’S COMING UP TO MY PORCH AGAIN, MA’AM. WHAT? I’M GOING TO SAY GOODBYE NOW. THERE’S NOTHING MORE THAT I CAN DO, MA’AM. ALL RIGHT. YOU HAVE A GOOD NIGHT. VERY INTERESTING. SPARTANBURG 911 HAS RELEASED A STATEMENT ABOUT THAT INCIDENT, READING. AS WE PREVIOUSLY STATED, THE HANDLING OF THIS CALL DID NOT MEET THE STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONALISM OR CUSTOMER SERVICE WE EXPECT FROM OUR TELECOMMUNICATORS, NOR DID IT ALIGN WITH OUR CORE VALUES. THROUGH OUR INVESTIGATION, WE HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THE TELECOMMUNICATOR IN QUESTION DID IN FACT TAKE FURTHER ACTION. AFTER SPEAKING WITH THE CALLER, SHE CALLED THE OFFICER BACK, EXPRESSING HER BELIEF THAT HE NEEDED TO RETURN TO THE SCENE, WHICH HE SUBSEQUENTLY DID. ADDITIONALLY, SHE FOLLOWED UP WITH ANOTHER CALL TO THE OFFICER WHILE HE WAS SPEAKING WITH THE CALLER TO ENSURE THAT HE HAD MADE CONTACT WITH THE INDIVIDUAL. HOWEVER, WE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS WAS NOT COMMUNICATED TO THE CALLER AT THE TIME. THE LACK OF COMMUNICATION CAUSED THE CALLER AND HER FAMILY UNDUE STRESS, AND WE DEEPLY REGRET THE NEGATIVE IMPACT THIS HAD ON THEM. WE WANT TO ASSURE THE PUBLIC THAT WE ARE TAKING SWIFT AND DECISIVE PERSONNEL ACTION WITH THE TELECOMMUNICATOR INVOLVED. WE REMAIN COMMITTED TO LEARNING FROM THIS INCIDENT AND TAKING THE NECESSARY STEPS TO PREVENT SIMILAR SITUATIONS IN THE FUTURE. IF YOU WANT TO SEE THAT FULL STATEMENT AGAIN, HEAD TO WYFF4.COM. MOVING TO GREENVILLE COUNTY. NOW, IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR CLEATS OUT. ATHLETES PUTTING THEIR BEST FOOT FORWARD YESTERDAY, TRYING OUT FOR THE GREENVILLE TRIUMPH SOCCER CLUB, MESSIAH SOCCER COMPLEX HOSTED THAT TRYOUT.
