The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president, Faruque Ahmed, has promised that players in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will get their payments on time, even though some franchise owners have delayed payments. According to the rules, franchises should pay 50% of a player’s earnings before the tournament starts, 25% during the tournament, and the last 25% after it ends. The league, which has seven teams, began on December 30.

Franchises slow with bank guarantees

Since becoming the BCB president in August, Faruque Ahmed said he is talking to franchise owners about these payment delays. However, he did not say why most franchises except Fortune Barishal haven’t provided the required bank guarantees. Bank guarantees ensure that if a franchise doesn’t pay, the BCB can step in and pay the players. In the past, the board has used these guarantees to ensure players get paid. This year, without these guarantees, there are worries about whether players will be paid.

Faruque confirms players will get paid

Faruque reassured, “We are constantly talking to the franchise owners. I told them they must pay the players. Although I can’t explain exactly why they haven’t paid the guarantee money, it’s important to understand their situations over the last few months.” He added that as the BCB president, he has personally talked to franchise owners to ensure they feel like partners and reassured them of support since they are also investing in Bangladesh cricket.

More problems for the tournament

This payment issue arose shortly after another problem on the tournament’s start day. Angry fans, dealing with problems buying tickets, broke the main gate at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. This incident shows that the league faces ongoing organisational issues.

How much do Bangladesh Premier League players earn?

• The BPL governing council has established distinct salary slabs for local and foreign players. The highest paid local cricketer can earn up to Tk 80 lakh, while the top foreign player’s salary is capped at US$ 80,000.
• Local players are categorized from ‘A’ to ‘G’, with corresponding salaries:
  • ‘A’ grade: Tk 80 lakh (₹57.6 lakh)
  • ‘B’ grade: Tk 50 lakh (₹36 lakh)
  • ‘C’ grade: Tk 30 lakh (₹21.6 lakh)
  • ‘D’ grade: Tk 20 lakh (₹14.4 lakh)
  • ‘E’ grade: Tk 15 lakh (₹10.8 lakh)
  • ‘F’ grade: Tk 10 lakh (₹7.2 lakh)
  • ‘G’ grade: Tk 5 lakh (₹3.6 lakh)
• Foreign players in the ‘A’ category can earn a maximum of US$ 80,000. Players must be acquired through a draft system, except for direct signings of foreign players.
