Food recalls related to bacteria contamination hit their highest level in five years in 2024. That included 154 recalls from common pathogens E. coli, listeria and salmonella, according to data from the Food Industry Counsel law firm.
Why It Matters
Those who consume food that has been recalled by the Food and Drug Administration are at risk of serious illness or even death.
Food items are usually recalled because of contamination from pathogens like listeria or salmonella. In other cases, the products have been mislabeled and do not contain adequate warnings about known allergens in the food.

What Happens Next
Upon finding food in your home that has been recalled, you should follow the recall’s instructions on how to discard the food. Some shoppers will be able to return the item for a refund, while others may need to just throw it out.
“There are many horror stories of consumers who thought a food recall was just for humans, ended up feeding the food in question to a pet, and had the heartache of dealing with an animal that got very sick or sadly passed away,” Beene said. “Don’t question the rules. Just follow them.”
