Langer y Ponting comentaron juntos en la ceremonia de apertura de la BBL en Perth el 15 de diciembre.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) remains the topic of discussion even in a rival franchise tournament like the Big Bash League (BBL). The Optus Stadium in Perth was hosting the BBL 2024-25 opener between the Melbourne Stars and the Perth Scorchers, and behind the mics were Australian batting greats and good friends Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer. Yet, IPL remained the talking point.
LSG vs PBKS in BBL
Batting first, the Stars lost two early wickets, and Marcus Stoinis came into the middle. Ponting and Langer started raving about the batter as he faced Andrew Tye in the middle overs. Langer, who’s Lucknow Super Giants‘ (LSG) head coach since 2023, talked about how much he enjoyed having Stoinis on his team.
Apart from Stoinis’ stellar performance with the bat and handy bowling, Langer also lauded the all-rounder for creating a great environment in the LSG dressing room. Ponting, his good mate, who recently became the Punjab Kings (PBKS), quickly quipped that’s exactly why he got Stoinis at the IPL 2025 auction.

Why LSG couldn’t get Marcus Stoinis at IPL 2025 auction
Stoinis had started a bidding war at the auction. His bid started at Rs 2 crore, and it went until Rs 11 crore as Punjab Kings outbid LSG. The all-rounder was Lucknow’s third-highest run-scorer, and after failing to buy him at the IPL 2025 auction.
“Stoinis was definitely in our plans. We would have used the RTM for him had he been within 10 to 10.25 crores, but he went beyond. Yes, we would have definitely wanted Stoinis with us. We are disappointed that he is not (with us), but this is the dynamic of any auction; now what to do?” LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka had said earlier this month.
